EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene and Springfield school districts have agreed to pay $575,000 to settle a lawsuit with the mother of a teenage girl who was sexually abused by a track coach. The districts admit no wrongdoing and say they settled to avoid the cost of going to court. As part of the deal the mother drops a federal lawsuit that asked for more than $18 million in damages. The Register-Guard reports Chad Schacht pleaded guilty to sexual abuse charges and was sentenced to five years in prison.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Fire and Rescue says a man suffered burn injuries in an overnight fire at a duplex in southeast Portland. He was taken to the burn center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. The fire was reported about 12:30 this morning by 911 callers who said a tree fire had spread to the duplex.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Gresham woman is back in jail facing multiple charges over a false report that her 6-year-old daughter was missing. Police says 30-year-old Sara L. Edmond made the false report April 13 in an attempt to prevent the girl’s father from gaining full custody. Dozens of officers and volunteers searched for 10 hours before police found Edmond and the girl hiding under a hotel bed.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) – Detectives are trying to identify the sensitive thief involved in stealing thousands of gemstones from a truck in University Place, near Tacoma, Wash. A sheriff’s spokesman tells KOMO-TV the Oregon sunstones vanished April 9 when someone broke into a truck parked at a golf course. The Oregon sunstone is the official state gemstone of Oregon.
