SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers don’t appear to be interested in asking voters to create a sales tax or requiring labels on genetically modified foods. Those bills and dozens of others failed to clear a key deadline in the Oregon Legislature last week. Lawmakers are still working on gun-control measures, a bill allowing marijuana dispensaries and one banning suction-dredge mining.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The search for an Oklahoma teenager in the southeastern Oregon wilderness has been suspended indefinitely until conditions improve. The Harney County sheriff says no search is planned until weather improves and snow begins to melt, allowing searchers to comb Steens Mountain. Nineteen-year-old Dustin Self has been missing for a month.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – The president of Bend’s tourism agency says expanding Oregon State University-Cascades into a four-year institution could be a boon to tourism. La Placa tells The Bulletin that a four-year university would be a primary economic driver that would attract new residents and visitors. OSU-Cascades was the first Oregon university to offer a bachelor’s degree in tourism.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – New signs are warning visitors to Willamette Valley wildlife refuges that there’s no jogging allowed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the rule has been in place for years. One official tells the Statesman-Journal that says jogging could have an adverse impact on breeding wildlife.
