HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Hillsboro police say a man who ran away from a corrections center attempted to carjack two people before he was arrested. The Oregonian reports the 28-year-old man also ran into a bank where he yelled about a robbery before running out another door.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A short break in the weather has allowed a rancher with a helicopter to search a rugged mountainside in southeastern Oregon for a young man from Oklahoma who is missing in the area. Dustin Self was last heard from about a month ago. He said he was inspired by the movie “Into The Wild” to test himself against the wilderness.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Maine’s two U.S. senators are asking that the USS Portland, an amphibious transport dock ship named after the city of Portland, Ore., also be named in honor of Portland, Maine. Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King note the “rich naval history” of Portland and South Portland, Maine.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Coast Guard says it won’t send ships this year to the Portland Rose Festival or Seattle’s Seafair, blaming the automatic federal budget cuts. The Coast Guard said it would continue to set up safety zones and do maritime enforcement for the events. The Navy has also withdrawn from the events.
