Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton is drafting a new policy in favor of releasing illegal immigrants jailed for nonviolent misdemeanor crimes. The Oregonian reports immigrant rights advocates have been pressuring Staton to reject requests from immigration officials to hold such people for deportation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police are adding extra patrols after a fatal gang shooting earlier this week. The Oregonian reports that the death Wednesday of 18-year-old Edward Jewell Paden was the first fatality in 13 gang-related shootings this year. He was shot at a gas station in northeast Portland and died at the scene.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department says they don’t need to hear about every piece of wood debris washed up on state beaches. A spokesman says they’ve been flooded with reports of just plan, old driftwood after a large painted object washed up in Oceanside on March 22. The object — apparently a decorative arch — could be from the Japanese tsunami.

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – It took nearly 12 hours for beekeepers to round up a half billion bees that have been buzzing alongside Highway 97 north of Madras since a truck crash Sunday. KGW reports members of the Central Oregon Beekeepers Association wore protective gear as they carefully picked up each hive.
