PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a trooper checked Facebook to determine that a driver whose face didn’t match his license was really a fugitive wanted on felony warrants. Lt. Gregg Hastings says an equipment violation prompted Trooper Travis Neubauer to stop a car Sunday on an Interstate 5 ramp in Lake Oswego. The driver did not match the photo on his license and he wasn’t the car’s registered owner. The man said he was driving his fiancee’s car so the trooper checked her Facebook page on his mobile computer and learned she was dating a man named Kelly Prowse, who was arrested.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The FBI is offering a $2,000 reward to help catch a Lane County bank robber it calls the Tall Man bandit — the man is 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-4. He’s been robbing a bank a week in the Eugene-Springfield area, mostly in grocery stores. The latest holdup was yesterday at a branch in Eugene. The FBI says he gives tellers a note demanding cash, then leaves.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Supreme Court has let stand a ruling that makes it tougher for small-time gold miners to work their claims on federal lands across the West. The high court yesterday denied without comment a petition to hear an appeal from The New 49’ers, a gold-mining club based on Northern California’s Klamath River.
SEATTLE (AP) – The owner of a derelict barge that required a $22 million cleanup after oil spilled into the Columbia River in southwest Washington has been sentenced to four months in prison. Federal prosecutors said Bret Simpson of Ellensburg, Wash., was also sentenced to eight months of home detention. He earlier pleaded guilty to two criminal violations of the Clean Water Act.
