Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

NASELLE, Wash. (AP) – Authorities say a passing driver who stopped to investigate a damaged tree in southwest Washington found two young Oregon girls injured in a car crash that killed their mother. The Washington State Patrol estimates the car driven by 26-year-old Jessica Marie Rath of Astoria hit the tree sometime early yesterday. Troopers said it’s likely the 4-year-old girl pulled her more seriously injured 2-year-old sister from the car and covered both of them with a blanket.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A utility that warned ahead of time about the dangers of loose holiday balloons says a flyaway bundle of metallic Valentine’s Day balloons caused a power outage that affected 5,000 Oregon customers. Pacific Power says some of the balloons got tangled in power lines and others melted in the Monday outage that affected customers near Independence, southwest of Salem. The Oregonian reports the power was out for about six minutes.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A bald eagle struck and injured along Interstate 84 in Oregon got a helping hand from Portland firefighters and Multnomah County animal control officers. KATU-TV reports that the firefighters were driving on the highway Monday when they were flagged down and told about the eagle. They used their truck to block off several lanes and called animal control officers, who captured the bird and took it to the Audubon Society in Portland. The bird has a broken leg and injuries to both feet. It also is suffering from partial paralysis.

CASTLE ROCK, Wash. (AP) – Authorities say three men accused of stealing a commercial truck loaded with about $10,000 worth of roofing shingles from a Portland business have been arrested in Castle Rock, Wash. The Oregonian reports that the truck from ABC Supply Co. was equipped with GPS, which allowed officers to track it to a home.
