RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) – As the new chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Sen. Ron Wyden was scheduled to tour the Hanford nuclear reservation. But, today’s tour by the Oregon Democrat took on added weight following Friday’s announcement that a radioactive waste tank is leaking. There’s added pressure to complete a waste treatment plant at Hanford and secure waste in underground storage tanks to prevent radioactivity from reaching the Columbia River.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Tomorrow is the deadline for Oregon parents to make sure their children’s immunizations are up to date or they could be excluded from school. The shots are required by law for community health. A Public Health Division official says if school vaccination records are not up to date, the child will be sent home. Parents may seek an exemption for religious reasons.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Hand sanitizer sparked by static electricity may have started the fire that burned an 11-year-old girl in her room at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Ireland Lane suffered third-degree burns to 18 percent of her body in the Feb. 2 fire in Portland. The father of the Klamath Falls girl was napping in the room at the time and woke up to smother the flames with his body after she ran from the room.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber and Oracle executives are making an announcement today in Hillsboro about jobs. The Oregonian reports they are expected to announce the software company is retaining jobs in Hillsboro that it had considered moving to Mexico.
