SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Neighbors are mourning an older couple killed in a mobile home fire in Salem. Some tried to help Friday but the flames were too hot, the smoke too thick. Firefighters found the bodies and indicated they died of smoke inhalation.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A man begging along the side of a road in Beaverton isn’t asking for spare change. Earl Martinez is holding a sign that reads, “Need Kidney Donor.” The 28-year-old told KOIN he was born with a genetic kidney disease that rules out family members as donors. He has been on dialysis for 18 months and been waiting more than a year for a transplant. Martinez says his insurance will cover all medical costs.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Passenger Rail Leadership Council is considering routes for high-speed rail travel in Oregon. The Register-Guard reports that there are four alternatives the 21-member group is looking at for the future route of passenger rail in the Willamette Valley. The group includes five city mayors, six legislators and transit officials from the state, Portland and Lane County. Their study is under way with the leadership council set to choose one of the four by fall of 2014.

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) – The Crook County sheriff’s office says a 13-year-old Klamath Falls boy was seriously injured in an off-road motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon near Prineville. The sheriff’s office says the boy and his father were riding in one direction when they encountered an oncoming motorcycle. Sgt. James Savage told KTVZ the boy was apparently startled and flipped his bike. He was airlifted to a hospital in Bend and then to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland.
