Car Thefts Increase in Florence; SVFR On The Front Lines; Stroke Major Killer

Lock Your Car-Take Your Keys

The Florence Police Dept. has taken 11 reports of stolen vehicles within the City limits of Florence from late August to today’s date.  In 7 of those incidents the keys were left inside the vehicles making the vehicle an easy opportunity for theft.  Commander John Pitcher released the information to media with the hopes of making citizens more aware of the dangers of leaving keys and other personal belonging in vehicles, especially in the view of potential thieves. Most crimes of this nature are crimes of opportunity and the more safety measures you can take to protect your belongings the better.  Never leave your car running and unattended and never leave packages purses or wallets in plain view.  The more difficult it is for a thief to steal a vehicle the less likely it is that your will be stolen.

SVFR Crews Work The Front Lines

Two local engines and several crew members from the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue continued to be deployed in southern California this morning as fires in Venture and Sylmar continue to burn out of control.  Currently 96 thousand acres have burned or are burning and more than 275 personnel and 75 apparatus from Oregon are assisting.  The two fires are currently 5 and 10 percent contained respectively.  If you have friends or family that are deployed to these fires you can follow updates at the OSFM Facebook page.

Stroke Major Killer

Every year over 140 thousand Americans die of stroke. With figures of this magnitude the Western Lane Ambulance District has partnered with PeaceHealth Riverbend, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and LifeFlight Network to produce a video that covers what to do if you  think you might be having a stroke.  The first several minutes into a stroke are the most critical and if you can recognize the signs of a stroke you have a much better chance of survival if you can act immediately.  The acronym  F.A.S.T. stands for  Face Drooping, Arm Weakness, Speech Difficulty, and Time to Call 911.  The quicker you can seek medical attention the more likely that some of the damaging and lasting effects of a stroke can be minimized and even reversed.  The produced video is available on the KCST website and at our Facebook page.
