ODOT Announces Project

If you like taking the scenic route and use the Reedsport to I-5 corridor be ready for some traffic delays.  Beginning next Monday August 14th, ODOT will begin construction on a $7.4 million project that repairs or replaces 34 culverts along Oregon 38 (Umpqua Highway). As many as five different work zones may be in operation at any given time.  The projects include replacing the current box culverts with bridges in several locations along the way.   Construction will limit highway traffic to a single lane in several places for one year. Temporary traffic signals will be installed in late August or early September.  New box culverts will be installed at Scott Creek and Green Creek. Traffic at both locations will be limited to a single lane with flaggers for a period of two to three consecutive weeks. At other times, motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with flaggers.  The project also repairs or replaces 30 small culverts along Oregon 38 between Reedsport and Elkton and two small culverts on U.S. 101 near Winchester Bay.  The Oregon State Police will provide additional patrols throughout the project area.  Construction is scheduled for completion in September 2018.

Free Eclipse Glasses

If you have not already gotten your solar eclipse glasses in order to safely view the August 21st eclipse, Western Lane Ambulance and the Florence eye clinic have joined together to distribute 2000 pair of safety glasses.  The glasses, which are specially designed to protect you from looking directly into the sun during the eclipse will be made available beginning Monday August 14th, and can be picked up at several locations around town.  Including the Siuslaw Public Library, Western Lane Ambulance, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, Florence Eye Clinic, and the Chamber of Commerce Office.  Some Locations may limit the number of pair for each person, so they ask that you please get only what you need.
