Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — James McCann, Justin Upton and Alex Avila homered for Detroit — and that was before the Tigers added nine runs in the fifth inning en route to a 19-9 rout of the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Felix Hernandez (2-2) allowed four runs in two innings in his shortest outing since 2015, and Seattle’s next two pitchers fared even worse.

DETROIT (AP) — Mariners star Felix Hernandez is going back to Seattle to have a stiff right shoulder checked by team doctors after lasting only two innings in his start at Detroit on Tuesday night. There was no injury announcement after he was removed from the game, but afterward, manager Scott Servais said the right-hander was dealing with stiffness.

UNDATED (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers got “Nurkic Fever” late in the season and it helped carry them into the playoffs. But without big man Jusuf Nurkic — except for about 15 minutes — in the postseason’s opening round, the young Blazers were no match for Golden State. The defending conference champion Warriors swept Portland in its fourth playoff appearance in as many years. Expectations were higher for the Trail Blazers this season after they surprisingly advanced to the second round of the playoffs last year. There wasn’t a whole lot of turnover in the offseason, with just a few new pieces added to the puzzle. But the NBA’s youngest roster didn’t appear to have the same cohesiveness or consistency as they had last season. December was especially brutal, with Portland going just 4-11.

UNDATED (AP) — Oregon State University has unveiled a new logo in an effort to make the school stand out in Oregon and around the world. The Gazette-Times reports the logo OSU President Ed Ray presented to students Monday features a beaver, the school’s mascot, perched atop a shield-like academic crest filled with symbols representing various aspects of the university. The new academic crest will replace the simple OSU letterform emblem that has served as the university’s logo since 2003.
