NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A Newport officer who shot and wounded a hammer-wielding suspect has been found to be justified in his use of force against the 53-year-old man. KOIN-TV reports the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office said that Officer Andrew Ashpole was justified in the Dec. 9 shooting of Nantharath Thilavanh.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Corvallis police say a woman confronted an officer with a realistic-looking toy gun and challenged him to shoot her, eventually surrendering to authorities. Police tell KPTV she dropped the fake weapon after multiple officers confronted her Tuesday and was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 50-year-old man who was set to go to trial next month for killing another man in a fight at a Portland motocross event this past summer has died. The Oregonian reports Michael Taylor died days before Christmas. He was charged with manslaughter and assault in the death of 61-year-old Anthony Mancuso. Court records show Taylor was in poor health.

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) – A Wisconsin judge will allow jurors in a homicide case against a former police officer accused of killing an Oregon woman to hear about another woman the defendant is suspected of killing. Former West Allis officer Steven Zelich is charged in the 2012 death of 19-year-old Jenny Gamez, from Cottage Grove, Oregon.
