Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – Chris Carter drove in the go-ahead run with Houston’s third solo homer, rookie Lance McCullers pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Astros enhanced their position in a crowded AL playoff race with their 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night. Houston moved with 1 1/2 games of first-place Texas in the AL West and maintained its slim lead in the chase for the second wild card.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners are hiring former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto as their general manager. He replaces Jack Zduriencik, who was fired in late August after seven disappointing seasons during which the club failed to end its playoff drought. With the Toronto Blue Jays making the postseason this year, the Mariners now have the longest playoff absence in baseball at 14 years and counting.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) – Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell says he is not taking play-calling duties away from offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi for their game against the Seahawks next Monday night. He has hope the Lions can have success on offense, pointing to how they were “humming along pretty well,” in the preseason and early in the season opener at San Diego.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A former Willamette University football player has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and a drug charge in connection with the killing of a 66-year-old man in Salem last year. Twenty-two-year-old Beau Wesley Smith changed his plea yesterday and was sentenced to just over six years in prison. Smith was arrested about a half-mile from where Michael Hampshire’s body was found.
