WASHINGTON (AP) – Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley has become the 31st senator to announce support for the Iran nuclear deal, as momentum builds behind the agreement the Obama administration and other world powers negotiated with Tehran. Merkley’s backing puts supporters within reach of the 34 votes required to uphold a presidential veto of a congressional resolution disapproving the agreement.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – One of Oregon’s first hemp farmers says a lack of seed is making it tough to get going. Josephine County Commissioner Cheryl Walker says fertile seed is expensive and hard to come by because the federal government prohibits imports. She figures it will take three years for her to save enough homegrown seed to produce a crop big enough for traditional products – fiber, oil and seed.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – There won’t be any fireworks at the University of Oregon’s season-opening football game next weekend. Eugene city officials denied the university’s request to shoot fireworks from a park next to Autzen Stadium. Eugene Springfield Fire Chief Randy Groves cited fire danger in denying the permit.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Thorns played last night before their second sellout crowd of more than 21,000, though it was bittersweet. Already eliminated from the playoffs, the Thorns honored a pair of popular players who are retiring from the game: goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and defender Rachel Van Hollebeke. The two were celebrated by the Providence Park fans before the match against the Washington Spirit.
