EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A fire official in Oregon says a spectacular fire has destroyed Eugene’s historic Civic Stadium and prompted the temporary evacuation of a nearby two-block area. A Eugene-Springfield Fire Chief said the stadium’s dry, seasoned lumber caused the fire to spread quickly. He said the cause is under investigation. No one was hurt. The Register-Guard reports the fire was declared under control last night.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Slow-poke drivers in passing lanes on Oregon freeways would sometimes have to make way for motorists with heavier right feet under a bill under consideration in the Legislature. The measure would designate the left lane on highways as a passing lane when there isn’t congestion, requiring slow drivers to move over for faster-moving traffic.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say a man in a grocery store parking lot brandished what appeared to be a gun and officers shot him to death. It turned out he had a starter’s pistol. The officers said that without provocation, the man grabbed what looked like a gun out of a vehicle and pointed it in the direction of the officers and the two other people. The man was identified as 29-year-old Alan Lee Bellew, from the Eugene-Springfield area.

PACIFIC CITY, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon sheriff says a 16-year-old Salem boy died after falling off a steep cliff onto the rocks below at Cape Kiwanda on the north Oregon coast. The Oregonian reports that Tillamook County Sheriff Andy Long says the teen was identified as Rick Nelson, a student at Sprague High School in Salem.
