SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber’s fiancée, Cylvia Hayes, has launched a legal fight to keep her private emails out of the public eye. Hayes is asking a judge to rule that she is not required to turn over her emails to The Oregonian, which requested them under the state’s public records law. Kitzhaber resigned last week amid allegations that Hayes used her relationship with him to land consulting clients. He has repeatedly said they did nothing wrong.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – President Barack Obama says the federal government plans to strengthen regulations regarding oil train safety. Obama made the remarks during a brief interview with KGW-TV’s Laural Porter, who was invited to Washington, D.C. as part of a round of local television interviews. Obama told KGW the Department of Transportation is talking to all stakeholders in order to strengthen and secure how oil train cars are passing through.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon school district is reviewing its tardiness punishments after a picture posted on Facebook of a 6-year-old sitting behind a cardboard screen in the lunchroom generated widespread outrage. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports the criticism was so intense, the district superintendent and a police officer stood guard Wednesday outside the school.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Homicide detectives from the Portland Police Bureau were called to the bank of the Willamette River after a body was seen under a drain pipe. Police say investigators have tentatively identified the 48-year-old man, but have not determined the cause of death. An autopsy will be done today.
