What started out as a theft investigation several months ago, resulted in the arrest this week of a 21-year old Florence man for possession of child pornography.

Florence police detective Brandon Ott said stolen computer equipment containing the suspected pornography was traced to Gary D. Case.

The person who had reported the stolen equipment reportedly found what he believed to be his hard drive at a second hand store. When the drive was surveyed, images of child pornography appeared.

Police were led to an intermediate party and eventually wound up with Case. He was arrested this week and additional computer equipment in his possession was seized.
Case was booked into the Lane County Jail Tuesday on one charge of encouraging child sexual abuse. Ott said additional charges are pending.

Deception Complex Fouls the Air

Fire crews in Eastern Lane County made headway yesterday on a large wildland blaze near Oakridge. The Deception complex has burned about three square miles.

The smoke plume rising from the fire this week prompted officials to issue air quality warnings in the Oakridge area and through the central Cascades. Officials say they received calls from as far away as Bend.

Residents of the Deception Creek mobile home park have been on alert for possible evacuation.

Fire bosses said an air inversion today could continue to make things smoky, but cooler temperatures and higher humidity expected this weekend should help firefighters.
