DALLAS, Ore. (AP) – The homeless man who accompanied Miley Cyrus to the MTV Video Music Awards and who had been sought on an Oregon arrest warrant has turned himself in and posted bail. Corrections officials in Dallas, Oregon, says 22-year-old Jesse Helt will be expected to appear before a judge in about two weeks. Records show that Helt pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal mischief and criminal trespass several years ago and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. The warrant was issued in 2011 after he violated probation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say an apology note with a phone number left outside the door of a Beaverton sexual assault victim has led to a man’s arrest. The Oregonian reports that police say the woman reported she was assaulted Aug. 15 by a man who entered her apartment through an unlocked sliding door. The woman says she didn’t know the man. On Wednesday, police arrested Cruz Bonilla in nearby Hillsboro.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a van driver who reports that his brakes failed collided with a streetcar in downtown Portland. Sgt. Pete Simpson says the van driver shouted to people in a crosswalk to get out of the way last night but was unable to stop before hitting the streetcar, which derailed. One person on the streetcar was taken to a hospital for treatment. The van driver was unhurt. No citations were issued.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A spokeswoman for crews fighting Oregon Cascade Range wildfires blamed for making the air unhealthy over a wide area says smoke from the Deception Complex has lessened. She says the fires yesterday generated less smoke than the giant plume that drew concerned calls on Wednesday from as far away as Bend. She says another expected air inversion could make things smoky today.
