PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Wil Nieves doubled and had three hits and Cole Hamels got a victory when he wasn’t at his best as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 4-3 yesterday. Kendrys Morales homered for Seattle. Hamels (7-6) didn’t have his best stuff against the Mariners, giving up three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts, one walk and two wild pitches, but he got just enough run support .
SEATTLE (AP) – Chris Wondolowski tapped in a point-blank shot in the 65th minute last night and the San Jose Earthquakes came back from the worst lost in franchise history to pull out a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders. The Earthquakes (6-9-7) were routed 5-0 at home last Saturday by FC Dallas. Even with the draw, the Sounders (13-7-3) climbed back into a tie for both the Western Conference and overall top spot in MLS.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks defensive end O’Brien Schofield is more determined than ever to prove himself after what he calls a “crazy” offseason. Schofield was one of the most disruptive players on Seattle’s defense in the Seahawks’ 41-14 preseason win over the San Diego Chargers last Friday night. Schofield racked up three tackles – two for loss – a sack and four quarterback hits.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – Michigan and Washington have decided to renew their rivalry. The Wolverines will play the Huskies in Seattle in 2020 and will host them at the Big House in Ann Arbor the following year.
