DETROIT (AP) – Chris Young pitched six shutout innings and the Seattle Mariners beat Detroit 8-1 yesterday, winning the weekend series and moving back ahead of the Tigers in the race for the second AL wild-card spot. Seattle’s Lloyd McClendon, managing his first series in Detroit after serving as Jim Leyland’s hitting coach, was ejected for the second straight game. McClendon was tossed for arguing after Detroit’s Alex Avila drew a seventh-inning walk. Young (12-6) allowed four hits and a walk. He improved to 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four career starts against Detroit.
UNDATED (AP) – Jameis Winston and defending national champion Florida State are No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll. Florida State received 57 of 60 first-place votes yesterday from the media panel. No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 Oklahoma each received one first-place vote. Ohio State is No. 5 and Auburn is No. 6.
SEATTLE (AP) – Brittney Griner had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Phoenix Mercury set a WNBA record with their 29th win, beating the Seattle Storm 78-65 in the season finale last night. Candice Dupree added 16 points to help Phoenix (29-5) top the previous mark set by Los Angeles (28-4 in both 2000 and 2001) and Seattle (28-6 in 2010). Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips scored 11 points apiece.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) – Connor Walsh hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to give Lynnwood the lead and the Washington club beat Rapid City, South Dakota, 7-5 on Saturday to remain alive in the Little League World Series. Walsh homered off reliever Daniel Vigoren to give Lynnwood a 6-5 lead.
