SEATTLE (AP) – Bartolo Colon came within seven outs of a perfect game, giving up a single to Robinson Cano with two outs in the seventh inning, and the New York Mets held off a late rally to beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 yesterday. Colon then had to hold on as Seattle rallied in the eighth and came within inches of tying the game. Seattle had no answers for the rotund right-hander, who gave up two runs and three hits in 7 1-3 innings.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Incoming Florida State freshman Kendal Williams won the 100 meters at the IAAF world junior championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field last night, besting fellow American Trayvon Bromell. Williams finished in a personal-best 10.21 seconds, and Bromell followed at 10.28.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice is retiring from the NFL after an injury-plagued career that included issues with concussions. The Seahawks announced Rice’s decision yesterday, two days before the start of training camp. The news was first reported by Pro Football Talk. Rice missed half of last season with the Seahawks after tearing his ACL against St. Louis.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Oregon has been picked to win the Pac-12 football title in a preseason media poll for the fourth time in the past five years. UCLA also is favored to reach the league championship game in the poll released yesterday. The Ducks are the media’s favorite for the third straight season, getting 37 of 39 first-place votes in the North Division balloting.
