TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man has drowned while fishing in the Sandy River near Troutdale. The Multnomah County sheriff’s office says 52-year-old Birtha B. Subba had been fishing with his brother-in-law at Dabney State Park yesterday and decided to go upstream. The Oregonian reports Subba was swept away by the current.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The deputy director of the Oregon prison system has announced his retirement while a state ethics commission is three months into a six-month investigation of his conduct. Mitch Morrow was criticized by the Department of Justice that said he abused his office and assured his son was hired by the Department of Corrections and paid more than is typical for the position. Morrow contends he did nothing wrong.

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) – The recently-fired police chief of Prineville says he was undone by an ambitious deputy who had eyes for his job and a city government that resented the leave he took for military service. Former Chief Eric Bush says in a lawsuit that he was unjustly fired last week after a 10-month investigation by the city that centered on his alleged abuse of the city’s flex-time policy and the falsification of hours worked.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Former Oregon Gov. Vic Atiyeh has died. Atiyeh was the Republican governor from 1979 to 1987 who shepherded the state through a deep recession in the early 1980s. His family said he died last night at age 91.
