GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – More evacuations have been advised due to fast-growing Oregon wildfires, this time in Jefferson County outside Sisters. Authorities said yesterday the Bridge 99 Complex fire has tripled in size since Wednesday, and was threatening rural homes along the Metolius River from Allen Springs Campground to Lake Billy Chinook. A level III evacuation advisory – the highest level – urged residents to leave their homes.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley’s campaign says a conservative super PAC is buying television ads, presumably to boost Merkley’s Republican rival. Merkley spokesman Andrew Zucker said yesterday that Freedom Partners Action Fund purchased nearly $1.5 million worth of airtime beginning Aug. 6. Freedom Partners is an independent expenditure committee linked to the Koch brothers, who are major donors to conservative candidates and causes.

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) – Jackson County authorities say a man missing since last week was found alive in Ashland. A spokeswoman with the sheriff’s office says a citizen called Wednesday to report that 30-year-old Carlos Ruiz of White City was in a parked car. Ruiz has diabetes and went five days without the pills and insulin he needs daily. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Though he signed the document, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales says he’s not happy with the settlement that ended the city’s legal battle with police Capt. Mark Kruger. Back In 1999, Kruger posted a plaque in a city park that honored Nazi-era German soldiers. He was later suspended, but the city has now agreed to remove the disciplinary action from his personnel file to help settle a new legal claim. Hales says he hears the community outrage and agrees with much of it. The mayor says he signed the document because he was told that the city might lose a court fight with Kruger.
