TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have identified the student killed by a teen gunman at a high school in a quiet Columbia River town in Oregon. The shooter also injured a teacher before he likely killed himself. Troutdale police Chief Scott Anderson said that the 14-year-old victim was a freshman at Reynolds High School who was killed in the boys’ locker room.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters are mopping up another wildfire on the outskirts of Bend that broke out yesterday afternoon. A Fire spokeswoman says a lookout on Lava Butte spotted the smoke about four miles from the southern flank of the Two Bulls Fire, which is contained after burning more than 10 square miles. Helicopter and engine crews quickly put it out.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – After Josephine County voters turned down a tax increase to fund the jail, the Grants Pass City Council has decided it wants to continue paying extra to keep some jail cells open for local criminals. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports that the council will create a utility fee to generate $1 million a year. That would guarantee 20 to 30 jail beds will be available for people arrested by city police.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon University System Chancellor Melody Rose has announced she is leaving her post to become president of Marylhurst University. Rose leaves at a time when the power in Oregon higher education is moving from the chancellor’s office to governing boards at each of the state’s seven public universities.
