BEND, Ore. (AP) – Officials say that an evacuation order has been lifted for about 200 homes as firefighters battling two fast-moving wildfires just west of Bend work to keep the flames away from the residences and the city’s watershed. Hot and windy weather helped the two blazes quickly grow to more than 6,000 acres. The fires started Saturday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An 18-year-old Vancouver woman was struck and killed by a charter bus yesterday afternoon in Portland. A witness told The Oregonian he saw her step into the crosswalk with the light in her favor when she was hit by the bus turning a corner. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Monserrat Hernandez Garcia.

BOARDMAN, Ore. (AP) – Portland General Electric has started building a natural gas-fired power plant in Boardman. The plant is located next to a coal-fired power plant that is slated to close or be converted to a different fuel source by 2020. The East Oregonian reports the new Carty Generating Station will produce enough electricity to power about 300,000 residential customers when it opens in two years.

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) – Many in Union County are fighting plans to tear down a domestic violence shelter so a new courthouse can be built in its place. County officials have notified Shelter From the Storm that it must vacate its county-owned building by Sept. 1 to make way for the new $3.1 million court building. The La Grande Observer reports that more than 130 people turned out last week to protest the plan.
