PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A University of Oregon student who says she was sexually assaulted by three members of the men’s basketball team is making her first public statement since the controversy erupted on the Eugene campus. The unidentified woman, through an attorney, sent an open letter to the Daily Emerald campus newspaper saying the athletic department prioritizes winning over student safety. The alleged assault happened at the end of the regular season, and university officials allowed two of the players to compete in the NCAA tournament.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have selected high school slugger Alex Jackson with the No. 6 pick in the amateur baseball draft. Jackson was selected by the Mariners last night. It was the fourth time in the past six seasons Seattle has made a pick in the top six spots in the draft. Jackson was a star at Rancho Bernardo High School near San Diego. He batted .400 with 11 home runs in his senior season after hitting 14 homers as a junior and 17 as a sophomore.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Oregon State teammates Michael Conforto and Ben Wetzler are among five finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to college baseball’s top player. Other finalists announced yesterday are pitcher Aaron Nola of LSU, catcher Max Pentecost of Kennesaw State and pitcher-first baseman A.J. Reed of Kentucky. The award is presented by Easton Foundations and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

UNDATED (AP) – The Big Sky Conference is going to review whether it should continue to hold its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at the site of the regular-season champion or use some other model, including the possibility of a predetermined location. Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton says school administrators and conference staff will assess which format makes the most logistical and financial sense, taking into consideration travel costs, the time students are away from school and fan experience while also giving some advantage to teams that win regular-season titles.
