Local Sports – It’s MLB Draft Day

The Major League Baseball 2014 Draft gets underway this evening in Seacaucus, New Jersey.  Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto is projected as an early first round draft selection.  Twice the Pac Twelve’s Player of the Year, Conforto is a finalist for this year’s Golden Spikes award.  His Beaver teammates, left handed pitcher Jace Fry, and outfielder Dylan Davis are also ranked in Baseball America’s top 100 prospects for the draft.

With 40 rounds, it is one of the most extensive drafts scouting-wise in all of professional sports. Round 1 of the draft is the place for teams to get the most MLB-ready talent. While first-rounders are the ones you’ll probably see in the bigs first, players that get taken in the very late rounds have just as good a shot of making it to “The Show”. The Houston Astros have the first pick; the 2014 draft continues through Saturday.
