SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Marion County sheriff’s deputies say a 14-year-old boy accused of threatening to blow up his Salem school has been arrested and booked into juvenile detention. Deputies learned of the reported threat on Wednesday from staff at the Oasis Brooks Program, who said the boy had become upset with teachers. A search of the home turned up no bombs or bomb-making materials.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland has earned a national reputation for encouraging people to get out of their cars and onto bicycles and mass transit. But cars and trucks travel on streets marred by cracks, bumps and potholes. Officials have proposed a street fee that would cost households more than $100 per year. Scores of opponents at a public hearing yesterday say the proposal needs to be put to a public vote. But a commissioner says the issue is too important to risk an election defeat. The council is expected to vote June 4.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Oregon is among eight states that have formally committed to working together to put 3.3 million zero-emission vehicles on the nation’s roads by 2025. By signing the plan, each state agrees to more quickly build charging stations by removing red tape. They also agree to take other measures to make the cars more attractive to consumers.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – Students and staff of the Tongue Point Job Corps say they rescued a bald eagle they spotted flapping around in the Columbia River off Astoria. KGW-TV reports the crew was on board a ship and training on the river yesterday afternoon. The ship’s captain said the tired eagle tried to move away but the students and ship’s crew managed to scoop it into a net and get it safely into a box cushioned with blankets.
