ATHENA, Ore. (AP) – A prosecutor says a northeast Oregon police officer shot and killed an armed man who aimed a pickup truck toward him before pointing a gun at him early yesterday. Police had been looking for the man since he eluded them in a high-speed weekend chase. Umatilla County DA Dan Primus said Athena police Sgt. Erik Palmer on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.

TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – A Multnomah County sheriff’s trail rescue team has located a father and his 5-year-old son who got lost on trails near Lewis and Clark State Park in the eastern part of the county. Sgt. Steve Dangler said Elmando Brussard called for help yesterday afternoon after getting turned around on unfamiliar trials. They were found hungry, tired and thirsty in early evening.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A Grants Pass man who used stolen mail to obtain fraudulent credit cards has been sentenced in Medford to more than six years in federal prison. Investigators believe Gregory Stephen Brooks stole mail from more than 400 home and business mailboxes last year in Jackson and Josephine counties. The Oregonian reports co-defendant Michelle Renee Lustig will be sentenced next month.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon utility says an equipment failure at an Albany substation affected several other substations, knocking out power to 30,000 Willamette Valley customers. Pacific Power said it began restoring service within an hour and had all customers back online by 7:15 last night, nearly 3 hours after the outage began.
