EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Eugene man who police say is homeless has been sentenced to 120 years in prison after he was found guilty of rape and kidnapping charges. The Register-Guard reports Michael Eastman was convicted of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in a field near an interstate in 2012. Eastman was labeled a dangerous offender. Under Oregon law, that means a person has a psychological condition that makes them likely to reoffend.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – A Linn County judge will soon decide whether a family’s religious beliefs are relevant to the death of their 12-year-old daughter. Syble Rossiter died of complications from diabetes, and endured such a dramatic weight loss in the month before she died that a teacher confronted her mother. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports the family is part of The Church of the First Born, which believes traditional medical treatment is sinful. Syble’s parents, Travis and Wenona Rossiter, face manslaughter charges.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Central Oregon Community College decided not to hire its top choice for college president after discovering he was put on leave by another institution when a colleague accused him of sexual misconduct. The Bulletin of Bend reports a colleague filed a tort claim notice with Chemeketa Community College accusing Patrick Lanning of sexual misconduct at a Portland airport hotel in February.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – LaMarcus Aldridge had 29 points and 10 rebounds and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Houston Rockets 123-120 in overtime to take a 3-1 advantage in their first-round playoff series. The series moves to Houston for Game 5 on Wednesday. It was the third overtime game of the series.
