Four errors helped the Lancers to score five runs in the sixth inning yesterday in Florence and South Umpqua downed Siuslaw 9-4 in the opening game of the Far West Softball Season.  Coach Sean O’Mara said growing pains for the relatively inexperienced team were evident last night with the Vikings committing nine errors in all.  Siuslaw will be on the road Friday to Sutherlin for two games.

Weather Delays Baseball Opener

Viking Baseball was delayed yesterday because of field conditions in Myrtle Creek.  The game scheduled to be played at South Umpqua will be played today at four at Siuslaw High School.

On the college diamond…

Dylan Davis drove in three runs and Jared Casper had four hits, including a home run and the Beavers downed the Pilots 9-6 yesterday in Portland.  Florence’s Jake Thompson started on the mound for Oregon State and held a 4-2 lead when he left after three innings, but the win went to reliever Zack Reser who improved to three-and-oh on the season.

In Spokane, Coach George Horton picked up his 200th career win at Oregon as the Ducks held off a late rally by Gonzaga to win 3-2 yesterday.  The Bulldogs left 13 runners stranded on base during the game, including five in the final two innings.  Closer Jake Reed picked up his sixth save on the season by striking out the last two batters.  Oregon and Gonzaga meet again this evening.
