Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer and Dustin Ackley had a three-run triple while the Mariners batted around in the ninth inning, roaring back from an early two-run deficit for their eighth straight victory on opening day.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Nyjer Morgan hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning against new Athletics closer Jim Johnson and the Cleveland Indians sent Oakland to its major league-record 10th straight opening loss with a 2-0 victory last night. Nick Swisher added an RBI single against Johnson (0-1), who was then pulled from his A’s debut.

UNDATED (AP) – Washington State has hired Ernie Kent as its new men’s basketball coach, giving him another shot at leading a Pac-12 Conference program four years after he was let go by Oregon. The Cougars made the announcement yesterday afternoon, after the sides agreed to a five-year contract. Kent replaces Ken Bone, who was fired on March 18.

SEATTLE (AP) – An attorney for suspended Washington quarterback Cyler Miles says he won’t be charged after being investigated in an incident following the Super Bowl. Attorney Mike Hunsinger said he was informed that prosecutors did not have enough evidence to charge his client. The Seattle City Attorney’s office said yesterday no charging decisions have been made and the school says Miles’ status with the football program is the same.
