SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A proposal in the Oregon Legislature to use unclaimed judgments from class-action lawsuits to fund legal services for the poor has raised deep divisions in the legal community. The measure is supported by the Oregon State Bar but opposed by some of the state’s most prominent lawyers. In Oregon, when defendants lose or settle a class-action lawsuit they keep any unclaimed portion of the judgment.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A state senator seen as a key swing vote on the proposed Columbia River bridge replacement says he will be voting against it. Republican Sen. Bruce Starr of Hillsboro says that Oregon and Washington legislatures must work together on the project. Starr’s decision is a major blow to the effort to build the bridge despite Washington state’s refusal to contribute money.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate gave final legislative approval to a bill that would provide some legal immunity to underage drinkers who seek medical attention because of alcohol. The bill that only needs Gov. John Kitzhaber’s signature to become law shields people younger than 21 from alcohol-possession charges if they seek medical aid for themselves or a friend.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon City police department says the widow of an officer fatally shot last November has given birth to a baby girl. KGW-TV reports the baby named Ziva is the only child of Wendy and Robert Libke. She was born Tuesday.
