On the Pac-12 basketball court…

Hallice (Hollis) Cooke scored 14 of his season-high 20 points in the second half yesterday and Oregon State beat UCLA 71-67.  The win leaves the Beavs with their best record at the mid-point in the conference season since 1999… five-and-four.

In Eugene Saturday, Joseph Young scored 21 points, including a key 3-pointer that touched off a 12-nothing Oregon run midway through the second half and the Ducks defeated USC 78-66.  It was the first conference home win of the season for Oregon… they’re three-and-six in Pac-12 play.

Prep Wrestling

Two Siuslaw grapplers fared well at what turned into a four-way meet at Newport over the weekend.  Andrew Tupua won the championship at 145 pounds with two-points on a take-down with one second remaining in the title match.  Isaiah Burkhalter fell in the title round at 126 pounds 9-6 to finish in 2nd.

The meet had initially been intended to be  a “double-dual” between Siuslaw and opponents Newport and Santiam, but due to a scarcity of wrestlers across the weight classes, it turned in to a four-way including Reedsport.

Siuslaw will host a Far West Tri-Meet Thursday at four pm, then wrap up the regular season on the road Saturday at the Cottage Grove Invitational.
