On the mats…

Only a half dozen Viking Varsity wrestlers saw action, but three of those brought home hardware from the 17-team Sutherlin invitational.

Isaiah Burkhalter pinned his way through the tournament to win the championship at 126 pounds.  Jose DelaMora continued his string of successes, but just fell short in the championship round at 113 pounds to finish as the runner up.

Markel Bliss finished in a tie for 3rd at 195 pounds.

Viking wrestlers will be back on the mats Saturday in Newport.

Prep basketball Friday night…

The Viking Girls took the lead for good two minutes into the 3rd quarter and held on for a 46-41 Far West League win over the North Bend Bulldogs.  Ashlee Cole had 17 points; all in the second half; to lead the Lady Vikings.

For the boys, Siuslaw trailed by two at the half, but the Bulldogs put on a 20-5 run in the third quarter to knock the wind out of the Vikings’ sails for a 61-43 win.

In other Far West games Friday… for the boys:  Sutherlin beat Douglas 49 – 28; Brookings-Harbor downed south Umpqua 66 – 57; Marshfield had the night off.  For the girls, Sutherlin remains undefeated after a 52 – 19 win over Douglas; Brookings-Harbor mauled South Umpqua 70 – 26.

In Reedsport, the Lady Braves picked up a non-league win over the Bandon Tigers, 47 – 25.  The Tigers came out on top in the boys game… 49 – 24.

In the Mountain West the Mapleton Sailors were in Blue River Friday night where the boys fell to McKenzie 33 – 23; the Lady Sailors also lost, 41 – 7.

Turning to the Pac-12…

Oregon State was in Seattle Saturday afternoon where they led much of the way, but the Huskies put on a late game rally for an 87 – 81 conference victory.  Roberto Nelson led Oregon State with 31 points.

In Pullman yesterday afternoon, the Oregon Ducks snapped a five-game losing streak with a  71-44 win over Washington State.  Jason Calliste came off the bench for the Ducks and led scoring with 20-points.
