Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A group of Portland activists piled a dump truck’s load of winter coats and blankets on the street in front of a church that helps the needy. The Oregonian reports that this is the fourth year the group has delivered the warm-up gear to St. Andre Bessette Catholic Church and organizer Jessie Sponberg says he wanted a spectacle this year. Hence the dump truck yesterday afternoon.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Seven people have been arrested in Springfield after refusing to end their sit-in at a protest against the pending closure of a mail processing center. The Register-Guard reports that the protesters yesterday refused to leave the center’s loading dock when asked to do so. The processing center employs about 200 people and is slated for closure next year. A similar mail sorting center was closed in Salem earlier this year.

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – A prosecutor says a retired U.S. Border Patrol agent’s desire to avoid a costly divorce led him to kill his wife and a neighbor couple last summer in rural Coos County. A judge yesterday sentenced Edward Nelson to three consecutive life sentences without parole for the June 15 slayings of his wife, Kathleen, and neighbors Renae and Lola Cottam.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers have commissioned a Portland State University research center to figure out how taxing carbon would affect Oregonians and their factories and businesses. The study follows a regional agreement on climate change signed by Gov. John Kitzhaber and leaders of California, Washington and British Columbia. Kitzhaber promised that Oregon would put a price on carbon emissions.
