COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife and a neighbor couple in the rural Coos County community of Bridge and setting fire to their houses. A judge imposed three consecutive life sentences on 65-year-old Edward Nelson yesterday in Coos County Circuit Court in Coquille.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A group led by Oregon grocery stores has filed initial paperwork that could lead to a ballot measure on liquor privatization. The organization called Oregonians for Competition filed initiative paperwork with the secretary of state’s office yesterday. The grocers say in a statement that the state shouldn’t have a monopoly on liquor sales. They’re proposing liquor sales in stores that already sell beer and wine and are at least 10,000 square feet.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Bend say they’re looking for a bank robber who likes the old familiar places. Police say the man who fled with cash from the Home Federal Bank office in downtown Bend on Friday looks like the same robber who has hit that bank office twice before and who has hit another Bend bank office twice. Authorities say the man was armed and had a light complexion, weighing 230 to 260 pounds and standing 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-11.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – The body of a man who was reported missing last month has been found in the South Umpqua River. The Douglas County sheriff’s office said yesterday that 26-year-old Brandon Bell’s death is being investigated as a suicide.
