RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks center Max Unger and defensive end Red Bryant did not participate in practice yesterday as each went through the mandated concussion protocol after being injured last week against Tampa Bay. Seattle coach Pete Carroll says it’s too early to determine the status of either player for Sunday’s game at Atlanta. Unger has already missed two games earlier this season with an arm injury.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – There have been certain games during his coaching career where the disappointment has lingered for Pete Carroll. Most relevant to Carroll’s current situation with the Seattle Seahawks is last January’s NFC divisional playoff loss at Atlanta where his team rallied from a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter only to give up the lead in a 30-28 loss. Seattle returns to Atlanta this week with the lingering disappointment of what happened against the Falcons still fresh even 10 months later.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A year ago at this time, the Portland Timbers held their season-ending banquet, disappointed with an eighth-place finish in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. Now they’re eyeing the conference finals. The Timbers finished the regular season ranked atop the conference standings and hold a 2-1 advantage going into today’s second leg of their two-game goal-aggregate conference semifinal against the rival Seattle Sounders.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Washington State coach Mike Leach says many of his team’s problems aren’t between the sidelines: They are between the ears. Leach said yesterday many of his players are overthinking game situations, trying to anticipate every contingency. Washington State has its second and last bye of the football season this week before the Cougars play at Arizona on Nov. 16.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) – The one honor John Elway never thought would happen will take place tonight. Thirty years after he graduated from the university, Stanford will finally retire Elway’s celebrated No. 7 jersey at halftime of its game against second-ranked Oregon. He’ll join Jim Plunkett and Ernie Nevers as the only players whose jerseys have been enshrined by the school.
