MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A homemade hatchet found in creek is one of some 80 blades inspected by Ashland police in the two-year-old investigation into the slaying of a grocery clerk who was nearly decapitated. Deputy Police Chief Corey Falls told the Mail Tribune investigators have no active leads and few loose ends, but the case is still open. David Michael Grubbs was killed in November 2011 on a bike path running by a park and a school. The hatchet was found in December in a creek in Talent.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Police in Forest Grove, Ore., say they’ve made two arrests in the case of two young girls fatally struck by a vehicle as they played in leaves outside their house. Capt. Mike Herb said last night that detectives arrested Cinthya Garcia Cisneros of Forest Grove for investigation of failure to perform a driver’s duties to an injured person. Mario Echeverria of Cornelius was arrested for investigation of evidence tampering and hindering prosecution.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The sports editor of the Grants Pass Daily Courier has died at the age of 34. Larry Cathey’s wife, Linsay, told the newspaper that he died Saturday at home after battling colon cancer. A Michigan native, Cathey spent five years at the Daily Courier, starting as a sports reporter. He became sports editor in February 2012.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – A lawsuit brought by three women who allege a Columbia Gorge hospital and two executives didn’t take action that could have prevented sex abuse and rape by an anesthesiologist has gone to the jury. The Dalles Chronicle reports the women are seeking $18 million. The suit concerns the acts of Dr. Frederick Field, who pleaded guilty in September 2012 to sedating and abusing patients and employees over four years. He is serving a 23-year sentence.
