PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Police Chief Mike Reese has fired an officer who critically wounded a man with a shotgun he mistakenly thought was loaded with beanbag rounds. The Police Bureau said that Officer Dane Reister was notified of his dismissal on Tuesday. Reister shot William Monroe in June 2011. Police had been called because Monroe, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was acting oddly by tossing discarded flowers toward children in a park.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Immigrant rights activists in Oregon are asking the city of Portland to stop buying bonds from Wells Fargo, which has a mutual fund with shares in a company that operates immigration detention centers. The action is part of a nationwide campaign to get investors to divest from private prison companies. Most recently, the campaign has focused on local institutions such as cities, counties and universities. Portland holds $40 million in Wells Fargo bonds.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – State Sen. Jackie Dingfelder is resigning from the Legislature to take a job as senior policy director for Portland Mayor Charlie Hales. The mayor said yesterday that Dingfelder will bring expertise in areas such as planning, the environment and social justice. Dingfelder, a Democrat, was appointed to the Oregon House of Representatives in 2001 and was elected to the Senate seven years later. She starts her new job in November.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – A former Oregon National Guardsman who raped a fellow guardsman’s 11-year-old daughter has been sentenced to more than 37 years in prison. Last week, Judge Stephen Forte found 35-year-old Florentino Allen Valdez of Bend guilty of rape and sexual assault. The Bend Bulletin reports that the judge sentenced Valdez on Tuesday.
