GERVAIS, Ore. (AP) – A sheriff’s officer says a 13-year-old Gervais boy has been struck and killed by an Amtrak train. Marion County deputies said Diego Rodriguez was killed last evening as he walked with another boy along a double set of railroad tracks between Woodburn and Gervais. The other boy, 14, was not injured. Gervais is about 30 miles south of Portland.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Damage is estimated at more than $100,000 from rioting at the Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility. Superintendent Ken Jerin told the Grants Pass Daily Courier computers and furniture were trashed. Jerin says about nine students involved in the incident have been moved out. They may face charges of riot and criminal mischief.

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) – A central Oregon sheriff’s officer says three wild horses have been shot dead in the Ochoco National Forest east of Prineville. Crook County sheriff’s Sgt. James Savage said yesterday that Forest Service officers went to the area Sunday after getting a report from hunters who found three shot horses. KTVZ-TV reports that the Forest Service says one of the horses was alive with mortal injuries and an officer euthanized it. In 2011, a total of six wild horses were found fatally shot in the Ochocos.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland Fire and Rescue crew has saved nine puppies from a house fire. KATU-TV reports that firefighters arrived at the southeast Portland house fire yesterday to find the only resident outside and the puppies trapped inside. A crew with a hose line went in and rescued the pups. No one was hurt.
