WASHINGTON (AP) – A half-scale model of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that usually travels the country has been taken to Washington D.C. because the government shutdown is restricting access to the actual wall. The memorial’s creator, Jan Scruggs, brought the wall to Washington from Corvallis, Ore. The copy, which is metal and 250 feet long, arrived in Washington on Monday and has been set up on the Georgetown University campus.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man who prosecutors say falsely accused four Catholic priests in four states of sexually abusing him has admitted to a federal judge in Portland that he filed a phony lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Portland. Shamont Sapp told Judge Anna Brown yesterday that he was pleading guilty to mail fraud. The Oregonian says the cost of disproving his claim against the Portland archdiocese came to more than $60,000.
FAIRVIEW, Ore. (AP) – Police in the Portland suburb of Fairview say a woman found dead near the entrance to Blue Lake Park is a homicide victim. Sgt. John Pemberton said the woman was in her 30s. Her name was not released pending notification of relatives. The body was found yesterday morning.
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – The fourth of five hearings in Washington state on a proposed coal train terminal at Longview is set today at the Clark County Fairgrounds near Vancouver. Previous hearings have attracted hundreds of opponents and fewer supporters. The Longview terminal is one of three sites in the Northwest proposed to ship coal from Montana and Wyoming to Asia. The others are at Cherry Point near Bellingham and at Boardman, Ore.
