KCST’s primary transmitter on top of Translator Hill south of Florence was knocked off the air late Sunday afternoon by a power surge.  The incident caused the first activation of a recently installed emergency transmitter at the in-town studio.

Coast Broadcasting General Manager Jon Thompson said primary power went out on top of the hill and when it did, a power surge damaged the transmitter.  The emergency generator worked as intended, but the transmitter would not operate.

KCST was only off the air briefly though as the station was able to switch to the emergency transmitter.  Signal strength and quality may vary in different areas, it’s hoped repairs to the main transmitter will be made by midday.
