SEATTLE (AP) – A late September storm is bringing heavy rains and high winds to parts of Oregon and Washington, with an urban flood advisory issued for the Portland area and forecasters predicting gusts of more than 50 mph across the greater Puget Sound region. The National Weather Service issued high-wind warnings for last night into this morning for a region that stretched from the Canadian border to south of Olympia, saying gusts could reach 60 mph.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers return to Salem today for a special session tackling pensions, taxes and agricultural regulations. Gov. John Kitzhaber called the session earlier this month, nearly a year after he first proposed a budget that included cuts in pension benefits for retired government workers. He’s negotiated an agreement with legislative leaders that would include the pension cuts along with tax increases, tax cuts and a ban on local governments regulating genetically modified crops.
GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) – Gresham police originally thought a man was asleep in his vehicle in Gresham. But KATU-TV reports they have now launched a homicide investigation after officers discovered 31-year-old Jeffery Pope had died of an apparent gunshot wound. No arrests have been made.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Supreme Court says the family of a baby who sustained nerve injuries as a result of negligence by a Lane County medical practice should be able to collect the noneconomic damages of more than $1.3 million awarded by a jury in 2008. The Oregonian reports the boy’s shoulder became stuck during delivery and he was diagnosed with a permanent, disabling injury. A 1987 state law caps civil damages for pain and suffering at $500,000.
