KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kendrys Morales hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals last night. Morales hit his 18th homer to straight away center on a 1-2 pitch from Aaron Crow with Franklin Gutierrez, who had walked, aboard. The Royals used eight pitchers, tying a club record for a nine-inning game. Lucas Luetge worked two perfect innings to earn the victory. Danny Farquhar worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 15 tries.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks are still wondering how many healthy bodies they’ll have on the defensive line come Sunday’s opener at Carolina. Three important pieces returned to practice yesterday with defensive tackles Tony McDaniel and Brandon Mebane and defensive end Cliff Avril all getting some practice time. All three were limited, according to the team’s injury report. McDaniel and Mebane have groin injuries and Avril has a hamstring injury.

SEATTLE (AP) – Lamar Neagle scored off of a free kick by Marc Burch midway through the first half to lead the Seattle Sounders to their sixth win in seven matches, 1-0 over Chivas USA last night. The Sounders won their third straight and climbed into a tie with Los Angeles for second place in the Western Conference. Seattle is five points behind league-leading Real Salt Lake.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – After just one season, the Portland Thorns have something that their male counterparts, the Timbers, still covet: a championship. The Thorns celebrated the first National Women’s Soccer League championship with more than 500 fans at Jeld-Wen Field yesterday. Portland Mayor Charlie Hales was among those who thanked the team.
