COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Both an FBI agent and Oregon State Police explosives experts reportedly have helped with a late-night search of the Coos Bay Prayer Chapel after a fire hours earlier. The World newspaper reports that firefighters arrived at the chapel late yesterday after a passer-by noticed smoke. Firefighters contained the blaze within an hour. The newspaper says law enforcement personnel were seen using a thermal imaging device to examine contents of the building.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – A Pendleton man is due in court today after a prosecutor told a judge that the man is accused of killing a 78-year-old central Oregon woman with a shovel blow to the head. Deschutes County authorities say 30-year-old Joshua Jokinen called them Saturday to report he might have killed a woman, and the body of Carolyn Burdick was found shortly afterward. Burdick raised horses near Sisters, Ore.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – State troopers say one person died over the Labor Day weekend in Oregon, the lowest number of fatalities in a holiday weekend since 2002. Police say the state has not had a holiday weekend free of fatalities since 1970. Police said an Oregon City woman died in a motorcycle crash Saturday near Estacada.
SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon woman says her cat’s growling helped alert her to a man trying to break into her home. Rose Taylor of Silverton says she was sleeping early Sunday when her cat Addy’s growling woke her. Then the cat, she says, “Just flew out of bed.” Taylor tells KATU-TV she saw a man’s shadow and heard movement at a screen. Taylor says she jumped out of bed, started yelling, turned on a light and called 911. All the noise scared the man away. Police found some fingerprints at her house.
