Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) – A Gresham firefighter fell through a room while fighting a fire at a vacant home. The Oregonian reports the firefighter, whose name has not been released, was not seriously injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) – Employees who were destroying nerve gas and other chemical weapons at an Eastern Oregon plant knew all along that their jobs would come to an end. But it’s still a shock. Clint Shoemake started at the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility plant 12 years ago, knowing it was a temporary position. The East Oregonian says Shoemake began looking for a new job about six months before his Aug. 1 layoff. He hasn’t found many options for jobs that would pay what he had been making.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – It doesn’t have a campus yet, but Oregon’s newest four-year institution of higher education is recruiting its first freshman class relying heavily on its Central Oregon setting. Half of a billboard promoting the Oregon State University-Cascades Campus deploys two images: One is a student in a small lab setting, the other a student stretching to grab his snowboard as he flies through a clear blue sky. The Bulletin newspaper in Bend says the university will become a four-year institution in fall 2015.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – A dramatic season-opening victory against BYU gave Virginia coach Mike London and his players hope that some game-changing bounces might finally go the Cavaliers’ way after few did in 2012. Virginia will need the good bounces to continue when it hosts No. 3 Oregon on Saturday. The Ducks are coming off a game in which they gained 772 yards in a 66-3 victory against Nicholls State.
