Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A 35-year-old Salem woman accused of having sex with a 12-year-old boy has been arraigned on charges of rape and sodomy. Marion County deputies arrested Sarah Beth Hopkins last weekend. The Statesman Journal reports that her alleged victim is a friend’s son. The boy told his mother that he and Hopkins were sexually active for the past eight months.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – The Roseburg VA hospital has suspended surgeries that require overnight stays pending an investigation into the death of a veteran who died after a hernia operation. The Roseburg News-Register reports VA medical inspectors are looking into the June 25 death of retired Army Sgt. Ray Velez.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – It just got a little easier to get a job with Umatilla County. The county’s Board of Commissioners has voted to end a hiring freeze that took effect two years ago. Ending the freeze means department heads can make hiring decisions without board consent.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland officials say a Broadway Cab driver who stopped his taxi on Interstate 84 and ditched two women passengers will lose his taxi driver permit because he failed to meet a basic city safety code. The Oregonian reports that Ahmed Egal has 10 days to appeal. The women say Egal discharged them late on July 25 because of their sexual orientation. The newspaper says Egal told 911 dispatchers that the women were “real drunk, and so mean” and they did not want to pay.
