ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – Sport fishermen at the mouth of the Columbia River are protesting a decision to raise parking fees at the Port of Astoria. Bob Rees says the $20-a-day fee strikes many in the sport-fishing groups he represents as price-gouging, or revenge for recent changes in gillnetting on the river that restrict commercial fishing. But a member of the port’s commission says the port is “bleeding money” and needs the revenue. He says the gillnetting controversy has nothing to do with the parking fees.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The operations director of a Southern Oregon vineyard has taken a leave of absence amid word that he faces a federal charge of engaging in sex with a woman he was sitting with during a commercial flight to Las Vegas. The Mail Tribune reports that Troon Vineyards issued a statement from Chris Martin, the son of owner Larry Martin, saying news accounts have misrepresented what happened, but he has been advised by counsel not to give his own account.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Investigators believe a fire that gutted a five-story Portland apartment building was deliberately set. Portland Fire and Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman said at a briefing yesterday that authorities are keeping details of the probe under wraps until they can find more witnesses. The department is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to a conviction.
SAMMAMISH, Wash. (AP) – Police in Washington say they’ve recovered property stolen in nearly five dozen burglaries that hit victims in four Puget Sound-area counties and three cities in Oregon. Two people have been arrested. Police in the east Seattle suburb of Sammamish say detectives have tied property seized last week from a storage unit in the Puyallup, Wash., area to the thefts. Detectives are in the process of notifying victims in Portland, Beaverton and Tigard and in several Washington communities.
