Back to School!
Offices at local schools will be open beginning this week for parents and guardians to confirm registration information.
Siuslaw Elementary and Primary will be open from nine to three tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday. Incoming kindergartners can register anytime during those days. Staff there will also be looking to confirm information on returning students in grades one-through-five… as well as find out about new students in those grades.
The Siuslaw Middle School will be open from nine to noon and then between one and three Wednesday and Thursday.
Registration is set for next week at Siuslaw High School.
The first day of classes is set for Tuesday, September 3rd for grades though six and ninth graders. 7th, 8th, and upper classes at the high school hit the books beginning Wednesday, September 4th.
Loon Lake Camping Closure
A popular spot for water recreation in Douglas County is closed for overnight camping because of a lack of… water.
The Bureau of Land Management operates Loon Lake campground. Because of a lack of potable water and restroom facilities officials have opted to close the campground. Manager Mike Kelly says the day-use area, including the beach and the boat ramp will be open from eight AM to eight PM daily, but there will be no drinking water available.
Kelly said a dry spring led to lower water levels in wells that supply the park. He said people who had pre-paid campsite registrations after today will get a full refund.
Black and White Recycling…
You can’t just throw away old tires; and if you have a rusty old propane tank in your garage… you can’t just leave it at the curb for the garbage man.
Those are a couple reasons why some things have a tendency to accumulate around the garage or side yard.
The Florence Environmental Management Advisory Committee has teamed up with some local partners to help you clean some of that stuff out… and keep it out of the landfill.
The annual Florence Black and White Recycling event is set for this Saturday from nine to one at the Siuslaw High School Parking lot.
Volunteers will help you unload your vehicle… they’ll accept white things like refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, even toasters and old propane tanks. They’ll accept black things… like tires… as well.
There’s no cost and it’s open to anyone.
Siltcoos Paddle
In an effort to get people to explore Siltcoos Lake by boat, Dunes City will be hosting the first ever “paddle only” poker run this Saturday.
Kayakers, canoeists, and paddle boarders will meet at the Westlake Boat Launch. Participants get a map of the lake with a list of sites they’ll need to visit in order to pick up a playing card. At then end of the run they’ll meet at Dunes City Hall where they’ll be treated to lunch and they’ll compare poker hands.
It’s $10 per person… or $15 per couple. To register, contact Dunes City Hall.
By the way… the best poker hand will win one-third of the registration pot…
